Jesus the Rabbi
Jesus the Rabbi: What Is Discipleship?
In biblical times, a rabbi was a teacher, and Jesus was often called Rabbi by His followers. A disciple was more than a student who attended classes. A disciple was someone who followed closely, learned the teacher’s ways, adopted the teacher’s values, and lived out what was taught.
The word disciple comes from a term that means learner, follower, or apprentice.
So, What Is Discipleship?
Discipleship is the lifelong process of following Jesus, learning from Him, becoming like Him, and helping others do the same.
It is not simply gaining knowledge about God. It is allowing God’s Word to transform how we think, speak, live, serve, and love.
Jesus said:
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.”
— John 8:31
A disciple doesn’t just hear the Word—they continue in it.
Do We Really Have What It Takes?
On our own, no.
But through the power of the Holy Spirit, absolutely!
When Jesus called His disciples, they were fishermen, tax collectors, and ordinary people. They were imperfect, yet Jesus saw their potential. He trained them, corrected them, empowered them, and eventually sent them out to impact the world.
God is not looking for perfection. He is looking for availability, obedience, and a willing heart.

Reflection Question
Ask yourself:
“Am I simply a believer in Jesus, or am I actively following Him as His disciple?”
Belief is the beginning. Discipleship is the journey.
Declaration
🕊️ I decree that I am a true disciple of Jesus Christ. I am teachable, obedient, and willing to follow wherever He leads. I hunger for God’s Word and desire to become more like Christ each day. I will not be a hearer only, but a doer of the Word. The Holy Spirit empowers me to walk in truth, love, wisdom, and faithfulness. I am being transformed into the image of Christ, and my life will bear fruit for the Kingdom of God. In Jesus’ name, Amen! 🕊️
Jesus is still calling disciples today. The question is not whether He is calling—it is whether we are willing to follow. 💜🦋🙏🏾
